Te słowa rzuciły mi się w oczy, kiedy w końcu września 2003 r. weszłam do toalety na stacji benzynowej przy Palisades, autostradzie prowadzącej z Nowego Jorku na północ. Było to tylko pierwsze zdanie. Ktoś, już innym charakterem pisma, dopisał: – Jeszcze gorzej. Jest pozbawionym skrupułów oportunistą. Niepochlebne uwagi pod adresem prezydenta zajmowały niemal połowę przepierzenia oddzielającego toaletę od umywalek. To wotum nieufności wyrażone w miejscu, nie kojarzącym się na ogół z polityką, stanowiło odbicie sondaży opinii publicznej, które zaczęły wykazywać, że rekordowa popularność prezydenta, jaką cieszył się po atakach terrorystycznych 11 września 2001 r., (86 proc.) zaczyna systematycznie maleć. Mnie osobiście to ucieszyło. Za Georgem W. Bushem nie przepadałam już wtedy, kiedy był gubernatorem Teksasu. Sposób w jaki znalazł się w Białym Domu i sprawuje w nim władzę, a zwłaszcza wojna w Iraku, niechęć tę jeszcze umocnił.
